Looking Up at Skyscrapers

Our Client: Mobility Concept

Mobility Concept is a Dutch B2B SaaS company based in Haarlem. They have built a platform that enables large employers to manage corporate mobility for their employees. This includes trip planning, expense declarations, bookings for public transport and shared mobility, car rental and taxis, mobility cards, and government compliance reporting (WPM).

The platform integrates with banks, payment networks, and a wide range of mobility providers. Mobility Concept is currently launching a new mobility card based on OVpay, available as both a physical and virtual card, designed to support high transaction volumes across public transport. Further integrations are planned with additional mobility, parking, and payment providers.

Their client base includes large enterprise organisations such as Rituals, EY, Schiphol, Ayvens, and Alphabet (BMW Group). Founded in 2011, the company generates approximately €3.5 million in recurring revenue and has built a stable and growing B2B customer base. This is not a startup environment. It is a profitable, established product company with long-standing client relationships and strong customer retention. The culture is calm and structured, with a focus on quality, reliability, and delivering things properly rather than moving fast at the expense of long-term outcomes.

The Challenge

After more than 10 years of outsourced development, Mobility Concept is bringing engineering in-house. They are hiring a Lead Software Engineer to take ownership of the platform and help define how engineering is done going forward. This is a hands-on leadership role combining architecture, development, and mentorship.

As Lead Software Engineer (Tech Lead), you will take ownership of the platform and play a central role in shaping how engineering is structured and delivered as the business transitions to an in-house model. This is a hands-on leadership role, requiring a strong balance of system design, technical execution, and team guidance.

1. Platform Ownership & Architecture

  • Take full ownership of the existing .NET / Azure-based platform, developing a deep understanding of how the system operates end-to-end.

  • Assess and improve system architecture, with a focus on scalability, performance, and long-term sustainability.

  • Identify technical risks, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement, and define pragmatic solutions.

2. Backend Systems & Integrations

  • Work across backend services and integration layers, ensuring reliability and consistency across all connected systems.

  • Design and maintain APIs and integrations with external partners, including payment networks and mobility providers.

  • Ensure the platform remains stable and adaptable as new integrations and use cases are introduced.

3. Development & Delivery

  • Design and build features across the platform where needed, maintaining a hands-on approach to development.

  • Balance new feature development with continuous improvement of the existing system.

  • Introduce practical engineering standards and best practices to support consistent delivery.

4. Engineering Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor and support engineers within the team, raising the overall quality and consistency of technical output.

  • Act as a technical reference point, helping guide decisions and resolve complex challenges.

  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

5. Transition to In-House Engineering

  • Support the transition from outsourced to internal development, including knowledge transfer from the external partner.

  • Establish clearer internal ownership of systems, architecture, and technical decision-making.

  • Help define how engineering should operate as an internal function.

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Decision Making

  • Work closely with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.

  • Provide structured effort estimations and technical input to support prioritisation and planning.

  • Balance business needs with technical constraints, making informed and pragmatic decisions.

Tech Environment

  • .NET / C#

  • Microsoft SQL Server

  • Microsoft Azure (Functions, Service Bus, Blob Storage, KeyVault)

  • API-driven architecture with external integrations

  • React

Candidate Profile

You are a high-agency engineer who thrives in hands-on environments and enjoys working on real systems with real complexity. You are comfortable stepping into an existing platform, understanding how it works, and making informed decisions on how it should evolve.
You combine strong technical depth with practical thinking. You are not only focused on building, but on improving how systems are designed, integrated, and scaled over time. You are confident working with stakeholders, guiding engineers, and taking ownership of technical direction.

Functional Experience

  • 8+ years of experience building production-grade software in product-led environments.

  • Proven experience working within B2B SaaS organisations (essential).

  • Strong backend experience using .NET / C# and Azure.

  • Experience working on complex, integration-heavy systems involving APIs and external services.

Technical & Systems Mindset

  • Architecture & Systems Thinking: Solid understanding of system design, scalability, and trade-offs across evolving platforms.

  • Integration Focus: Experience designing APIs and working with interconnected systems, where reliability and consistency are critical.

  • Problem Solving: Comfortable working within existing systems, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing practical improvements.

  • Experience with using AI tools in development workflows (e.g. Copilot, Cursor, Claude).

Delivery & Ownership

  • Hands-on Approach: Remains actively involved in development while contributing to higher-level technical decisions.

  • Ownership Mindset: Takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks, and is comfortable working with ambiguity.

  • Decision Making: Able to estimate effort, prioritise effectively, and support technical planning.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentorship: Experience supporting and guiding engineers, raising overall technical quality.

  • Cross-functional Working: Comfortable collaborating with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.

  • Communication: Able to clearly explain technical concepts and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to Have

  • Experience within fintech, payments, or similar transaction-heavy domains.

  • Exposure to scaling SaaS platforms or evolving mature systems.

  • Experience modernising legacy or long-standing codebases.

Additional Note
Full stack experience is preferred. However, the core value of this role sits in backend systems, architecture, and understanding how the platform works end-to-end, rather than frontend specialisation.
